  • Why Microsoft – Today’s Session
    • The American Imperative
    • Consumer Impact on Education
    • A look Outside
    • Driving Change
    • Start the dialogue
    • The pressures that are starting change – change is uncomfortable
  • The American Imperative
    • Using KINECT  to teach – alphabet fitness to teach by MAKING the shapes
    • Change is Upon education – K-12 has had to make some of those changes but higher ed has to catch up
    • In the past 10 years it was about putting IN the “stuff”
    • We try to emulate the “higher” experience
    • Education = Opportunity – “Education Pays” statistics “those people without an education do not have a labor job coming back for them”
    • “The best use of technology is when it makes the human process more precious.”
    • There is a new learning Model now – students now are looking to Learn from different ways – Focus on the PERSON
    • Education Market forces and technology trends
      • Accountability / Student Success / Economy / Consumer Devices / Demographics / Cloud Technology
      • Sub-prime Student Loan crisis: over $1 TRILLION – higher than Credit Card dept / Auto Loan Dept and 15% of Americans have student loans
      • Affordability and student debt – This is a consumer protection issue – the for-profits are actually good and they have quality processes – many of the Leading institutions are the worst “teaching” places
      • Federal Aid Relief Act – current “noise” being made on capital hill – “Enrollment in this program is likely to burden you with debt that a career in this field can not support” WARNING MESSAGE – Construction Protection in Higher Education
      • Already hit by the Gainful employment requirements: Must be “informed” – an Institutions “nutrition label”
    • Higher Education: The Advantage of the Elite  – I am going to work with the brightest and the best based on the BRAND (there is no actual proof that a “Harvard” is a better TEACHING institution – grad students are teaching… Professors are writing and publishing)
    • Learn from Domino’s – they know where they live in the food chain – Americanized Italian food business – core business: “Dominos Delivers” – Check out the Domino’s Tracker: (my kids order pizza JUST to watch the tracker) … a Real Time – run in the CLOUD – Have more info on how my Pizza is doing in the oven then how I am doing getting toward my degree
    • The Innovative University / Disrupting Class (Clayton M. Christensen) –
      • Key Themes for Education Disruptions
        • student centered learning
        • Personalization
        • adaptive learning methods
      • Disruptions occur with those whose alternative is nothing
        • alternative languages
        • credit recover
        • home tutorials / home school
        • after school / community programs
      • The Innovators Dilema
  • The Best free way to manage college – myEDU – may or may not make it – they went and got all the data that they could from public institutions – students can go and look at the Core data that students want to see – qualitative reviews of professors – they also have tools – student centric degree planner that looks at multiple institutions to help
  • 60% of the students want to move around – what if we made it easy for them to come and go – would that be a better engagement model then trying to KEEP them
  • KhanAcademy – they don’t have assessment / credits / degrees – will some institutions let students utilize those external sites
  • Taking the mechanics of gaming / engagement model – badges, stuff for their avatar, points & awards – loyalty programs
  • What makes Angry Birds addicting – the desire to have 3-stars on Every level
  • Gameful Research – how does that work for student engagement
    • RIT – intrinsic motivation – turned the Education project is an ACHIEVEMENT – supporting Rochester IT –
      • Earn points and reputation
      • Get points for what you do
      • collaboration with others
      • tracking
    • Student information LIVES in the Institution
    • HealthVault – far less information than you have health records – What about an EduVAULT ?  Looking for partners to help create an eco system that allows that students information like the Rainbow Button would be for Health Information – creating a way for students to manage their information that is still “owned” by their institution – all the multiple records would combine – issue: what about Accounting tools, there are requirements and policies
  • Selling Newspapers or Fortune Telling – 50% of higher education CIOs will lose their jobs for failing to balance customer efficiency with organizational efficiency.  … Needs to be about the Person – IT Leaders should adopt a strategy to become user device agnostic.  – Abandon notions that hardware vendors will develop and market devices to your specifications. They will NOT.
  • The Changing Role of IT
    • get out of the “stuff business” – embrace devices as a force multiplier – empowered end Users (Move from managing things to empowering users) – Accelerate collaboration via holistic identity and data protection model
    • From Managing Things to Empowers Users – there are things you OWN: User Affinity / Contextural Delivery – User Centric Management-Key to adapting to Consumerization of IT .. Strategic IT shirts of the “I”
  • Student360 –
    • Student Success / Effective Institutions / (something I can’t read because of the color) / Holistic approach: People / Process / Technology
  • Make information Portable / Accountability / Engagement
