  • Facebook reached 200 million users in less than one-year
  • If Facebook were a country – it would be the 2nd largest country in the world

  • Social Media: “…it mirrors and magnifies the Good the Bad and the Ugly”

The BAD

  • Online predators
  • Cyber Bullying – 43% kids who have experienced online bullying / 1 in 10 report it to an adult / 2-9X more like to commit suicide
  • Catfishing – people who are pretending that they are someone they are not online – ask to talk on a webcam
  • Loss of Privacy – Privacy is rarely the default option – 25% Facebook users don’t bother with their privacy setting
  • Fiction masked as Fact and it is easy to spread fast
  • Social Addiction or Overload

The GOOD

  • Connecting with Friends – discover old friends & colleagues / positive reinforcement / gather new ideas, referrals, recommendations / stay in touch / make new friends
  • Discover New Things – advice / news / videos / info / directions /
  • Social Commerce:
    • 74% of consumers now rely on social networks to guide their purchasing decisions
    • every time a consumer posts something on the web it is seen by: 150 people
    • “A brand is no longer what marketers tell the consumer it is – it is what consumers tell each other it is”
